As an integral part of the new freshman commons, the renovations to the Gillette House are designed to respond to new programmatic requirements that serve the residential college concept of integrating learning within the residential environment. Those components include a Seminar Room, Study Lounges, a Faculty Apartment, Head Resident and Resident Assistant rooms, common and recreational areas, music rehearsal rooms and a Cookie Kitchen.
This dormitory renovation creates home for 230 Vanderbilt freshmen at the Commons residential college. The interior design of the hall speaks to the freshmen in a fresh and mature language that incorporates renewable, recycled content and low VOC materials to create a healthy indoor environment. Those features, along with building reuse, high-efficiency lighting and HVAC systems, day-lighting strategies, to name a few, are key elements that qualify this building as LEED Certified.
