The design of the project utilizes the existing gym as both a programmatic and nostalgic anchor to the site. Added to the existing gym are two organizing spines one paralleling Nolensville Road, while the other parallels Thompson Lane. These spines not only create dramatic framed views to important spaces within the building (i.e. the pool, fitness room, etc.), they form exciting exterior spaces including a courtyard, pedestrian path and amphitheater. The running track, which makes up the second, floor knits together the old and the new spaces as it is woven through both and facilitates large two-story volumes that will allow light to flood the main level as it enters through clerestory windows. The exterior skin of the building is composed of brick, steel and metal panels in a variety of colors, reflecting the vibrant neighborhood in which it hopes to serve community and create center.
